DEFINING “BORDERS”

What does the word “border” mean to you? With the limitations of using colored paper and one ink color, I defined borders through geographical and industrial means. The Transcontinental Railroad was a 1,912-mile continuous railroad line connecting the eastern U.S. with the Pacific coast. The railroad itself created its own borders as it cut through cities, towns, rivers, mountains, etc. But while the railroad line was being constructed, the workers ran into many hurdles as they continued through the Rocky Mountains. Both the mountains and rivers created borders for the railroad. Pushing past the conventional form of a booklet, I created a book that broke through the borders of a two page book and into a four page map layout at the end. I used black tape to bind the pages together mimicking railroad construction.
